1972 Brian Cole (Association) died of a heroin overdose.

1983 James Jamerson, Motown Records session player died of a heart attack aged 45. One of The Funk Brothers played on many Motown hits by The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, The Four Tops, Martha And The Vandellas.

1987 David Martin, bass player with Sam The Sham & the Pharaohs died of a heart attack. (1965 US No.2 & UK No.11 single 'Wooly Bully').

2000 Jerome Smith from KC and the Sunshine Band died after being crushed by a bulldozer he was operating. Had the 1975 US No.1 single 'Get Down Tonight' and the 1983 UK No.1 single 'Give It Up.'

1957 The official Elvis Presley Fan Club was launched in the UK.

1960 Johnny Kidd and The Pirates were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with Shakin' All Over. Their only UK No.1.

1961 The Beatles began their engagement as regular headliners at Liverpool's Cavern Club. They performed about 300 shows over the next two years.

1962 Robert Zimmerman legally changed his name to Bob Dylan.

1963 Eric Clapton quits The Roosters to form Casey Jones and the Engineers.

1977 *** Pistol, Sid Vicious was fined Ł125 by a London court after he had been found carrying a knife at the 100 Club Punk Festival last September.

1980 Deep Purple scored their third UK No.1 album with 'Deepest Purple'.

1982 Jose Feliciano married Susan Moillian in California. Had the 1968 top ten hit with his version of The Doors 'Light My Fire.'

1986 Peter Cetera started a two-week run at No.1 on the US charts with the theme from the film 'Karate Kid II', 'The Glory Of Love', it made No. 3 in the UK.

1986 Chris de burgh was at No.1 in the UK with 'The Lady In Red', it was his first No.1 after twenty-four single releases.

1987 Alex Sadkin, record producer who had worked with Simply Red Duran Duran, Grace Jones and Bob Marley died from injuries sustained in a car crash in Miami.

1987 Dave Stewart (Eurythmics) married Siobhan Fahey (Bananarama).

1991 Rick James was arrested in Los Angeles, CA, and charged with the *** torture of a 24-year-old woman.

1998, Mojo Magazine published the results from a nation-wide survey asking 'Who is your favourite recording artist of all time: 5th place was Elton John 4th, Queen, 3rd, Frank Sinatra, 2nd, Elvis Presley and in 1st place, The Beatles.

1998 Beastie Boys started a three week run at No.1 on the US album chart with 'Hello Nasty', the bands third US No.1 album.

2000 Madonna's video "Music" premiered.

2000 Liverpool music store Rushworth and Dreaper closed down after 150 years of trading. The store had become famous after supplying The Beatles and other Liverpool groups with musical instruments.

2001 New Orleans International Airport was re-named Louis Armstrong Airport in honour of the New Orleans born trumpet player, singer and bandleader.

2004 Eric Clapton bought a 50% share in Cordings to save the historic gentleman's outfitters from closure. The store, based in London since 1839 had run into financial difficulties. The guitarist said he had been fond of the shop since a window display caught his eye when he was 16, and had become a regular shopper their. Cordings was the originator of the Covert coat and the Tattersall shirt and made riding boots for the Queen Mother, the Duke of Windsor and Mrs Simpson.

2005 Status Quo filmed a cameo appearance in UK's Coronation Street playing themselves. Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt were set to appear in three episodes of the long-running ITV soap.

2005 Brandon Flowers from The Killers married Tana Munblowsky in a private ceremony held in Hawaii.

2007 Prince kicked off a series of 21 sold out UK shows at London's O2 arena. Tickets for the events cost Ł31.21 - the same figure used by the singer to name his album, website and perfume. After completing the 21 nights the Jehovah's Witness was planning to take time out to study the Bible.
