1943 Denis Payton, sax, Dave Clark Five, 1964 UK No.1 single 'Glad All Over', 1965 US No.1 single 'Over And Over', plus over 15 other UK top 40 singles). Payton died on 17th December 2006.

1943 Jim Kale, Guess Who, (1970 US No.1 & UK No.19 single 'American Woman').

1948 Bill Hurd, The Rubettes, (1974 UK No.1 single 'Sugar Baby Love').

1941 Glenn Miller and his Orchestra recorded "Elmer's Tune."

1956 Elvis Presley's "Don't Be Cruel" is released.

1957 Just nine days after being on "The Big Beat," Jerry Lee Lewis returns. He again closes with "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On." By the end of the month it will top both the Country & Western and R&B charts.

1962 Booker T. and the MG's instrumental song, "Green Onions," was released.

1962 Neil Sedaka started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Breaking Up Is Hard To Do', his first US No.1 as an artist. It reached No.7 on the UK chart.

1966 The Beatles arrived at Chicago's O'Hare Airport to start their last tour of the U.S.

1966 John Lennon's controversial remark about the band being more popular than Jesus Christ is taking its toll. Stock in the band's record company, Capitol, is dropping and the city fathers of Memphis request the cancelation of an upcoming Beatles concert in the city. John apologizes for his remarks at a televised press conference.

1967 Elvis and Pricilla file for divorce. They had married in May of 1967.

1967 Appearing at this years UK Reading festival, The Small Faces, The Move, Marmalade, Paul Jones, Pink Floyd, Amen Corner, Donovan, Zoot Money, Cream, Jeff Beck, John Mayall, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac and The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown. An advance 3 day ticket cost L2. Arthur Brown's trademark flaming helmet burnt out of control and organiser Harold Pendleton's father-in-law had to douse the flames with a pint of beer.

1969 Diana Ross invited 350 guests to a Beverly Hills club to see the newest Motown act, The Jackson 5.

1979 Led Zeppelin played their last ever UK show when they appeared at Knebworth Park, England. Also on the bill, The New Barbarians, Todd Rundgren, Southside Johnny and the Ashbury Dukes, Chas and Dave and Fairport Convention.

1980 Madness played the first of two nights at Nottingham's Theatre Royal, supported by The Mo-Dettes.

1982 The debut of Anglo-American pop-rock band, the Pretenders is certified platinum about three years after it's released. The L.P. contained two hits, "Brass in Pocket" and "Kid."

1982 The self-titled album "Vanity 6" was released.

1984 Ray Parker JR. started a three week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with the theme from the film 'Ghostbusters'. Parker had been a session guitarist for Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye; a No.2 hit in the UK.

1985 Simon LeBon's (Duran Duran) boat capsized off the English coast during a race. The Royal Navy rescued him after he spent 40 minutes trapped in an underwater air pocket.

1986 After almost 20 years, six Monkees albums that were re-released, re-enter Billboard's LP chart.

1989 Three members of L.L. Cool J crew were arrested and charged with raping a 15 year-old girl. The incident took place after a concert when the girl had won a backstage pass on a radio contest.

1999 KISS received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

1999 Four music festivals took place in Cornwall for the full solar eclipse. James, The Levellers, Van Morrison, Kula Shaker and the Happy Mondays were all appearing at various events.

2000 Madonna gave birth to a baby boy Rocco Ritchie at The Cedars-Sinai Hospital Beverly Hills.

2001 Appearing at the Ozzfest at PNC Bank Arts Centre, New Jersey, Black Sabbath, Linkin Park, Slipknot and Marilyn Manson.

2002 Nelly and Kelly Rowland started a seven week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Dilemma.' Also a No.1 UK hit.
