1990 Del Shannon died of a self-inflicted gun shot wound.

2002 Bob Wooler died aged 76. He was the resident DJ and booker at Liverpool's Cavern Club during the early 1960's.

2005 Keith Knudson drummer with The Doobie Brothers died of pneumonia aged 56. Scored the 1979 US No.1 single 'What A Fool Believes' and 1993 UK No.7 single 'Long Train Runnin.'

1956 Buddy Holly signed a recording contract with Decca Records. He left the "e" out of his last name (Holley) and dropped it from his stage name as well.

1958 The Quarry Men appeared at the Wilson Hall in Garston. After the show Paul McCartney introduced George Harrison to John Lennon, George performs 'Raunchy' for John, who is impressed with the young guitarist.

1960 Mark Dinning went to No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Teen Angel', a No.37 hit in the UK.

1960 The House of Representatives Special Subcommittee on Legislative Oversight opened hearings on disc jockey "payola."

1964 The publisher of the song "Louie Louie" offered $1,000 to anyone would could find suggestive lyrics in the song.

1964 On their first full day in New York, The Beatles (minus George who had a sore throat), went for a photo-opportunity walk around Central Park. Extra police were called in to keep fans away. Later in the day The Ronettes interviewed the band for radio.

1980 In London, David Bowie and his wife Angie were divorced after nearly ten years of marriage. David gets custody of their nine-year old son, Zowie.

1981 R.E.M. made their first ever-recording sessions at Bombay Studios Smyrna, Georgia. Tracks included 'Gardening At Night', 'Radio Free Europe' and '(Don't Go Back To) Rockville.'

1988 The Who (without Keith Moon) reunited for their 25th anniversary at a London awards ceremony.

1992 UK act Right Said Fred started a three-week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'I'm Too Sexy', a No.2 hit in the UK.

1992 Wet Wet Wet scored their second UK No.1 album with 'High On The Happy Side.'

1993 Julian Cope raised over Ł2,500 for anti-fur campaigners Lynx after selling raffle tickets to win his trade-mark microphone stand.

1993 Tom Jones guest starred on NBC-TV's "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air."

1994 Oasis were forced to cancel their first foreign tour after they were deported from Holland. The band were involved in a drunken brawl on a cross-channel ferry resulting in members of the band being arrested and locked in the brig on the ferry.

During the show Chumbawamba singer Danbert Nobacon threw a plastic bucket full of cold water over UK Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott.

1999 Universal Music, Warner Music, BMG, Sony Music and EMI officially unveiled Project Madison. The system was developed by International Business Machines Corp. to permit fast, secure distribution of full-length, CD-quality albums on the Internet.

2000 It was announced that Stan "the Man" Lee would create a comic book of the Backstreet Boys.

2001 Eminem made his live UK concert debut when he appeared at The Manchester Arena.

2005 Pete Doherty was released from jail on bail after four nights when his manager paid the remaining L100,000 ($170,000) bail to Highbury Corner Magistrates Court, London. The ex-Libertines star had been charged with robbery and blackmail after a fracas at a London hotel. His bail arrangements stated he would not be able to leave his house between 2200pm and 0700am every night and must be accompanied by a security guard or his manager if he goes out at any other time.

2005 Kylie Minogue was voted the world's sexiest woman in her 30's by UK magazine Good Housekeeping. Sade was voted No.4 in the over 40's with Madonna coming in at No.7 and Jerry Hall at No.8. And Sharon Osbourne was voted into 3rd place in the over 50's section.

2006 Kelly Clarkson won two Grammys. The awards were for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for "Since U Been Gone" and Best Pop Vocal Album for "Breakaway". She was the first "American Idol" participant to win a grammy. She also performed "Because of You" at the show.
